News and Announcements Atwater Park Improvements Underway Crews have started on Atwater Park improvement projects, including bluff stabilization, service drive construction and installing the north section of the Atwater Beach boardwalk. As part of this work, the beach, bluff and southern part of the upper park area are closed off through until project completion in July. It is not expected that construction work will disrupt the accessibility or use of the north upper park area and playground throughout this time. Special events like the 4th of July fireworks and Men’s Club Chicken BBQ will take place as planned. This summer’s projects are the first steps in implementing the Atwater Park Master Plan that was developed in 2010. To view the plan, click here.
Open Book Scheduled for May 11 The Village Assessor will be conducting Open Book on May 11 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Village Hall (3930 N. Murray Ave.). Property owners have the opportunity to meet with the Assessor and ask questions of their property's assessed valuation. Should a property owner disagree with the new assessed valuation of your property as determined by the Village Assessor, you, as a property owner, have the right to formally object to your assessment and present your case to the Village Board of Review. Open Book Meeting Notice.
April 5 - Election Day Results A total of 5,619 Shorewood residents (55.6% of registered voters) participated in Tuesday's general spring election. The highest turnout in the last three spring elections was 33%. The voters re-elected Michael Maher to the Village Board and elected Don Ford to the other open trustee seat. Click here to see the results of the April 5 election. Sewer Facility Planning The fifth public meeting regarding the Comprehensive Sanitary Sewer, Storm and Drainage Facility Plan was held on Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Village Center. The Village introduced its team of engineers and presented their recommendations regarding facility plan implementation in Basins 1 and 6 and in the combined area of the Village. Meeting attendees had an opportunity for one-on-one discussion with the engineers that were assigned to their area of the Village.
Proposed Walgreens Redevelopment The developer Mandel Group Inc and RE Enterprises LLC introduced a redevelopment proposal to the Village of Shorewood for a mixed-use redevelopment project located within the North Oakland Avenue commercial district. The proposal includes relocation of Shorewood’s existing Walgreens Pharmacy to a new facility: 84 upscale apartment units a portion of which will be offered at affordable rents; and publicly accessible shared parking facilities which will serve Walgreens, Nehring’s Sendik’s and the nearby Oakland Avenue business district. The Village encourages residents to attend any and all upcoming public meetings or submit comments. For more, click here.
Finishing Touches on Capitol Dr. Construction this Spring The full length of Capitol Drive from Estabrook Parkway to Lake Drive in Shorewood was reconstructed in 2010, including pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalks, streetscape elements, and a new Oak Leaf Trail bridge. The contractor will return in the spring 2011 to complete final touches, including permanent pavement markings and paving the new Oak Leaf Trail bridge deck. Crews will also use this time to make any adjustments to the brick crosswalks and other necessary items. For more information about the project: Rain Barrel and Rain Garden Workshop on May 14 The Shorewood Conservation Committee will be holding a free workshop open to the public on Rain Barrels and Rain Gardens on Saturday, May 14. Learn about the benefits of residential rain gardens and rain barrel use and installation. Learn how you can collect and use rain water to beautify your lawn and garden, save on watering costs, and help improve the quality of our lake and river. You can reduce water pollution and lower your water cost by capturing water from your roof’s downspout into a rain barrel or into a rain garden. The free workshop is set for Saturday, May 14 at 12 noon in the Village Center (lower level of Shorewood Library).
Results from the Health Department Survey on Consolidation The Villages of Shorewood and Whitefish Bay are in the process of determining whether the Shorewood/Whitefish Bay Health Department should join the North Shore Health Department (which consists of Brown Deer, Bayside, Fox Point, Glendale, and River Hills). Public listening sessions were held on January 20, January 25, and January 29. A survey was also distributed to health department users and residents online.
